Regional Oil Recycling

One gallon of used motor oil can contaminate more than one million gallons of water. Not only is the oil toxic to plants, animals, and aquatic life—the lead, arsenic, and benzene that used motor oil contains are extremely hazardous.

Of the 140 million gallons of motor oil sold every year in California, 20 million gallons is neither burned in engines nor returned for proper disposal. This 20 million gallon problem is the focus of WRCOG’s Regional Used Oil Program.

The good news is that used motor oil isn’t worn out. It can be re-refined. Re-refined oil is certified by the American Petroleum Institute and meets or exceeds the standards of all major car manufacturers. Re-refined oil is used by the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, Frito-Lay, UPS, and even by NASCAR winner Sean Woodside.

WRCOG is leading the way to protect groundwater and surface water as well as our local environment from the hazards of used motor oil with two recycling programs:

Used Motor Oil Recycling
Boat Oil

Both programs assist Western Riverside County residents with proper disposal of motor and help to make sure it stays out of the environment and are funded by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Zero Waste - You Make It Happen!
